World Cup Beats

A nice piece of content that has cut through the plethora of ads that have been released in recent weeks surrounding the World Cup.

This spot comes from headphones-gurus Beats by Dre and is a lot longer than a lot of its competition (over four minutes in fact), which is positively blasphemous for anyone that works at Facebook.

Luckily, for the benefit of all of us who still pine after longer-form content, they've succeeded. Taking inspiration from the mix-tapes created back in the 90s hip-hop hay-day, it is aptly entitled The Mix-tape and addresses the idea of defiance.

Opening with a close-up of its young Russian protagonist (to whom it returns to at the end of the spot), it swiftly cuts between short, sharp shots of a number of footballing superstars such as Harry Kane & David de Gea: there's certainly no shortage of football talent as it continues either.

Then interjects the gritty voiceover, delivered by a proper Londoner, which acts as the punchy, humorous and hard-hitting narrator of a number of coming-of-age, footballing stories. Each tale appropriately looks at the life of one of our football superstars, having a peek at where they came from and what they're all about.

'Arry from Walthamstow encapsulates the story of England's main man whilst the "German kid, I mean, German-Turkish kid, I mean, German-Turkish-Muslim kid" is a snapshot of Mesut Özil's life, to name but a few.

I won't say too much more so as not to ruin the video, but it's an excellent piece of content and one which has managed to stand out from the noise; something that is immensely difficult to do during a sporting event of this magnitude.

Check it out here.
